Denis is a environmentalist political junkie. He had stints as the Associate Minister of Agriculture, Minister of Conservation, Minister of Land, the purchased a plot in the Gibbston Valley and planted Pinot Noir in 2001. He is the descendant of the 19th century naturalist William Swainson, a Fellow of the Royal Society, settled in New Zealand and named his first home "Hawkshead."
