Cabernet Sauvignon Day: How to Celebrate the World’s Most-Planted Wine Grape
In a nutshell: Cabernet Sauvignon Day is an annual celebration of the world’s most-planted wine grape. At Humble Grape, mark the occasion by exploring Cabernet Sauvignon in our London wine bars, asking the team what is open that day, or ordering a bottle from our collection of independent winemakers to enjoy at home.
Every year, wine lovers around the world raise a glass to Cabernet Sauvignon, the grape behind some of the world’s most famous red wines. At Humble Grape, any excuse to explore a brilliant bottle is a good one.
Whether you fancy discovering something new at one of our London wine bars or ordering Cabernet Sauvignon to enjoy at home, here is what makes this grape so special and how to celebrate it.
What Is Cabernet Sauvignon Day?
Cabernet Sauvignon Day, often shared as #CabernetDay, celebrates one of the best-known grape varieties in the wine world.
There are actually two dates you may come across. The original #CabernetDay, launched in 2010, is traditionally celebrated on the Thursday before US Labor Day. In 2026, that falls on Thursday, 3 September. Some wine calendars also recognise 30 August as International Cabernet Sauvignon Day, so you will often see Cabernet celebrations taking place across late August and early September.
The grape itself came about through a natural crossing between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, believed to have occurred in Bordeaux centuries ago. Its parentage was eventually confirmed through DNA research by scientists at the University of California, Davis.
Today, Cabernet Sauvignon is grown around the world, from Bordeaux and Tuscany to California, Chile, South Africa and Australia.
So, what makes it so loved?
Cabernet Sauvignon is typically bold, structured and capable of ageing beautifully. Expect flavours such as blackcurrant, black cherry and plum, often joined by notes of cedar, tobacco, graphite, herbs or mint.
Its firm tannins give the wine plenty of backbone, making Cabernet Sauvignon particularly good alongside rich, savoury dishes.

What Food Goes With Cabernet Sauvignon?
Cabernet Sauvignon loves rich, savoury food.
Think steak, roast beef, lamb and mature hard cheeses. The grape’s naturally firm tannins work particularly well with richer dishes, helping balance fat while complementing deep, savoury flavours.
For a plant-based pairing, try dishes built around mushrooms, lentils or other earthy flavours.
That also makes Cabernet Sauvignon a natural candidate for a proper Sunday roast, particularly if beef or lamb is involved.
