World of Wine: Alsace

It’s time to start practising your swirling and sipping, as on the 26th of February our Humble Grape wine bar in Liverpool Street will be hosting an incredible 3-hour wine tasting to get excited about. You’ll have the chance to sample a delightful array of six white wines, as well as a delicate pale rosé. This is your ticket to unlocking the vibrant spectrum of flavours Alsace has to offer - all in one palate-pleasing evening!

Alsace is a region known for its stunning landscapes, charming villages, rich cultural heritage, and of course: its world-class wines. Nestled along the border of France and Germany, Strasbourg and the surrounding Alsace region have witnessed a switching of control between the two countries since its conquest by French forces in 1681. But hey, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, right? And in Alsace’s case, it’s made them a cultural powerhouse as rich and diverse as the wines they produce!

Alsace also boasts a landscape dominated by vineyards, making it a treasure trove of exquisite white wines, often famed for their dry, crisp, and aromatic flavour. These include Gewürztraminer, Sylvaner, Auxerrios, and Pinot Blanc, so dry white wine lovers will revel in the floral, peachy notes produced by Alsatian grapes.

Oh, and let’s talk climate! As it is especially sunny, with yearly rain averaging just 23 inches, Alsace is one of the driest places in all of France and therefore perfect for growing sun-soaked grapes bursting with flavour. With these growing conditions, alongside its rich history, Alsace wine really is something special, making it a must-try for wine enthusiasts. After all, where else can you taste the traditionally sweet Riesling as a dry masterpiece?

In this wine tasting event, our expert sommeliers will reveal more tales behind Alsace’s distinctive taste, as well as touch on the Germanic influence that can be found in their grape varieties of Gewürztraminer and Riesling.

Find out more about the six wines in the tasting. Unfortunately this event has sold out, but you can browse on our Events page to find details about our upcoming World of Wine tastings.

Meet the Winemaker: Domaine Allimant-Laugner

Taking place across two evenings: on the 27th of February in our Battersea wine bar, and in Islington on the 28th of February, you can enjoy an exciting wine tasting hosted by Nicolas Laugner from the incredible winery, Domaine Allimant-Laugner. Trust us, this is an exclusive night that you won’t want to miss!

Picture a charming family estate in Orschwiller, in Northern Alsace. Grandma Allimant married Grandpa Laugner, which gave the winery its name, but the two families had actually been cultivating vines since the 17th century. With 12 generations of history in each bottle, you’re in for a night of unparalleled expertise.

In 2013, after completing his studies, Nicolas stepped into the family legacy, taking charge of the cellar, production, and marketing. At this event, he’ll be sharing stories of their family’s history, talking you through each wine, and sharing their hidden techniques, such as the fact that they choose to do most of their tasks by hand! It truly is a labour of love, and you can taste it with every sip.

Producing a whole range of Alsace wines, from Riesling to Gewürstraminer, you’ll have the chance to try a selection. Each wine will be expertly paired with sustainably sourced and organic dishes crafted by our Humble Grape Executive Chef, Dane Barnard, with each plate thoughtfully designed to complement the distinct characteristics of the wine. This is sure to be a night to remember!

Grab your tickets now for Battersea and Islington.

Don’t forget, we currently have a 20% discount running on our online wine shop. If you want to enjoy a bottle of Alsace wine from the comfort of your home, browse the shop.
