The foundation for the entire Appellation Control system in France is based on the rules drawn up in 1923 by Baron Le Roy of Chateau Fortia. The most remarkable feature of Chateauneuf du Pape is the soil. The soil of the appellation is famous for its rounded, baseball sized cobble stones called galets roules.
