The Islander Estate Vineyards is located near Parndana, an area originally cleared for farming by Soldier Settlers. To these Soldier Settlers, the term “Wally” was used as a nickname for someone acting a fool – unsophisticated and lacking in class. Australians often use opposites in giving nicknames. In keeping with this tradition the “Wally White”, a wine which is anything but a “Wally” – sophisticated, elegant and delicious.
Australia's third-largest Island Kangaroo Island is 70 miles south west of Adelaide in the Gulf of St Vincent. The vines on this rugged South Australian Island are cooled by the prevailing southerly winds from the Antarctic and the friable rich red ironstone soils afford the wines a unique sense of place. In 2000 Jacques Lurton planted an 11ha vineyard near Parndana in Kangaroo Island's heartland and christened the estate 'The Islander'. Close planting to restrict yields and increase concentration, fermentation in concrete tanks and old fashioned basket pressing plus quality fine-grained French oak all combine to produce wines with great structure and longevity.
